Ugh, i’m tired of the Tuxedo Kamen/Mamoru hate. It’s exhausting. I LOVE HIM. First off, let me say that Tuxedo Kamen is the perfect example of the 90’s boyfriend:

1) He rescues the girl…but only when she really really needs it.

What does Tuxedo Mask do really? He rescues her in the first episode when she is still so unsure of her abilities and later only when she is dire need of saving.  And what does he do? He throws a rose. It’s more of a distraction to the enemy and a wake-up call for Sailor Moon as to what’s really important.

2) He is the man who needs to be rescued.  A big part of the 90’s mentality is GIRL POWER. That women don’t need to be the DOD’s (damsel in distress) that there’s a man for the female protagonist to rescue.  It’s not that he has some horrible drug habit or abusive personality and he NEEDS YOU BABY.  It’s the idea that there is genuinely a person who needs you, if only for one instance.  Doesn’t it feel great to be needed?  Who doesn’t want to be needed?

3) He wants her to better herself.  Is Mamoru distant? Let me give you a little anecdote.  My husband and I are high school sweethearts (we dated for 9 years and have been married for nearly 2).  In high school he was an absolute dick to me.  AND I LOVED IT.  Why? Is it because I have horrible Daddy issues?  No.  It was because I liked a man who challenged me on my level.  Looking back everything I thought that was dickish was him challenging me.  Example: One day, after a ridiculously long marching band trip, we were in class doing the dumbest assignment known to mankind.  My future husband-to-be and partner on this assignment, turns to me and says, “Get me a dictionary.”  Exhausted, I got one.

“Wait, what did I just do?” I remember saying aloud as I handed it to him.

The next day, fully intent on not being a subservient partner on this project I told him (in a queenly manner), “Now, get ME a dictionary.”

Coolly, he looked at me and said, “You’re perfectly capable of getting one yourself.”

WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!

Imagine a man who doesn’t treat you like a princess.  A man who doesn’t treat you like a child.  A man who doesn’t infantilize you even though you cry at every little thing.  That is what Usagi has.  She has a man who treats her like a Warrioress, a man who treats her like a powerful girl, on the brink of womanhood.  Not a princess, but a QUEEN in the making.

THAT, my fangirl friends, is Mamoru.

But that’s all imho…
